Duck Nature Study

Some birds pick the easy life. The Common Eider is not one of them. She rides the swells of the freezing North Atlantic, shakes the icy water from her back, and climbs right in again, warm and dry the whole time. How? That is the question at the heart of this study, and the answer leads your family somewhere wonderful.

Over ten gentle days, your child will pull apart the secrets of a waterproof feather, learn why down is the warmest sweater in the world, and follow a duckling from the egg all the way to its first flight. They will trace the jagged coastline of Iceland, meet the “Duck Shepherds” who have sung to these birds for a thousand years, paint a soft coastal sea in watercolor, build a little stone nest shelter, and even layer up an Icelandic Skyr Parfait in the kitchen.

It is science, history, geography, and art, all wrapped around one quiet, remarkable bird. Inspired by our farm and made for slow mornings, curious questions, and the kind of learning that sticks because it started with a story.
