Chicken Nature Study

The chicken is the farm’s busiest gardener, scratching the earth, turning the soil, and keeping watch over the little miracle tucked inside her egg. In this study, we slow down and join her flock.

Over a 10+ day journey, your child will study the tools built into a chicken’s body, watch the life cycle unfold from egg to hen, and candle a paper egg to see the chick hidden inside. They’ll test the strange strength of an eggshell, forage like a hen using a fork and tweezers, and follow the flock across a world map from the bamboo forests of Ancient Asia to the first brick coops of Rome. Along the way there’s folk art inspired by Clementine Hunter, an eggshell mosaic, a poem to copy, breed cards to pore over, and a batch of deviled eggs to celebrate.
