Frog Nature Study

Some creatures ask you to slow down. The frog is one of them. While everyone else hurries indoors at the first grey cloud, the frog settles in and waits, because to a “Rain Caller,” rain is not a bother. It is a celebration.

This Frog Nature Study follows that little rain-watcher through a full expedition. Your family will study how a frog’s body is built for a double life on land and in water, from its periscope eyes to its permeable, water-drinking skin. You will watch the quiet miracle of metamorphosis, four stages from a jelly-like egg to a powerful land-leaper. You will travel three thousand years back to the misty rice paddies of Ancient China, where farmers listened to the “Frog Song” like a weather report. And you will get your hands messy, with a Dean Russo-inspired pop-art frog, a DIY rain shaker, a multi-sensory pond, and a plate of green Lily Pad Pancakes.

It is science, history, geography, art, and a little poetry, all growing out of one small creature. Warm, curious, and inspired by life on our family farm, it is made for children roughly ages 6 to 9, and it closes with a Naturalist’s Vow to become a “Frog Guardian.”
