There is a whole world working away just beneath the garden path, and the earthworm is its quiet hero. We like to call them the Midnight Gardeners, because while we sleep, they are down in the dark turning old leaves into rich, healthy soil.
This Earthworm Nature Study takes children on a 10-day journey underground. They will study how a worm is built for the dark, with its segments, setae, prostomium, and clitellum, and follow its life from a tiny cocoon to a fully grown adult. They will feel the push-and-pull of the Burrow Dance, shake up a soil jar in the Mud Lab, race rainwater through worm tunnels, paint with real earth pigments, and sculpt clay worms of their own. Along the way they will meet Charles Darwin and his famous Worm Stone, and discover why worms are truly nature’s tiny plows.
It weaves together science, history, geography, art, and sensory play, all with an easy, unhurried spirit. Curiosity always matters more than finishing every page.
Inspired by the rhythms of our own family farm, this study is made for the kids who love to dig. Find recommended books, supplies, and extensions at farmschoolco.com/Earthworm-resources.
