The Minimalist Guide to Nature Journaling Supplies (What You Actually Need)

One of the biggest myths about nature study homeschool style is that you need a backpack full of expensive gear.

We see the beautiful photos on Instagram of leather-bound journals, fancy watercolor sets, and high-end binoculars. It looks lovely, but it can also feel intimidating.

Here is the truth: The best tools are the ones you are not afraid to get muddy.

If you want to start nature journaling with your kids this winter, keep it simple. Here is my list of essential nature journaling supplies that cost next to nothing.

1. The Journal You do not need an expensive sketchbook. For a preschool nature curriculum, a simple spiral notebook or even a clipboard with loose paper works perfectly. 2. The “Mark Makers”

• Pencils: A standard #2 pencil is the best tool for the outdoors. It writes in the cold and doesn’t run if it gets wet. Try these neon pencils that can easily be spotted if dropped.

• Crayons: If it is freezing outside, markers can sometimes freeze or dry out! Old-fashioned wax crayons are reliable winter warriors. Twistable crayons are a good option for kids on the move.  There is no paper to peel off and leave on the trail. Plus, they don’t melt as fast in the sun!

3. A “Collection” Jar This is the secret weapon. Bring a plastic peanut butter jar or a Ziploc bag. Your child will want to bring home treasures—an acorn, a pine needle, or a cool rock. For bug lovers, these jars with a magnifying glass built in are a little nature lover’s dream.

4. A Guide to Spark Curiosity The supplies are just the tools. The magic comes from what you are looking at.
