Dolphin Nature Study

There is a dolphin in the Amazon that turns pink. It is born a shadowy charcoal gray, and over many years it brightens into a luminous, rosy adult that glides silently through the flooded forest. That single, surprising fact is where this study begins, and from there it opens into a whole world.

Inspired by our family farm and our own love of slow, wonder-led learning, this study follows the boto for ten gentle days. Your child will explore how the boto uses echolocation to hunt in pitch-black water, why its neck bones let it turn its head sideways around tangled roots, and how its body “blushes” pink when it warms up. Then the expedition widens outward: mapping the great rivers of South America, hearing the Amazonian legend of the Encantado, and painting a glowing jungle scene in the bold, saturated style of Tarsila do Amaral.

Along the way there are experiments with spoons and blindfolds, a living-room slalom through a sunken forest, a fresh-fruit dolphin snack, a layered tissue-paper craft, a copywork poem, and a completion badge to celebrate the journey. It is science, history, geography, and art, all carried by one fascinating creature.
