Have you ever held a tiny red jewel in the palm of your hand? One second it is a quiet spotted stone, and the next it splits its back in two and zips off into the sunlight. That is the ladybug, and this is her story.

The Ladybug Nature Study is a slow, gentle expedition written and illustrated by hand here on our little family farm. Over 10 days of discovery, children ages 6 to 9 look closely at ladybug anatomy, follow her four life-cycle stages, and learn why her fire-bright color is really a warning label to birds. They trace her name back to the medieval “Beetles of Our Lady,” map her welcome across Europe, and meet artist Marc Chagall before making their own stained-glass window, a painted garden guardian, and a batch of chocolate-dipped strawberry ladybugs.

It is built to be low-prep and mentor-led, so you can follow your child’s curiosity instead of racing to finish every page. There is a field journal, a poem for copywork, a read-aloud book list, a science review, a completion badge, a bookmark, and a fact poster to hang up when you are done. For older or extra-curious learners, a “Going Deeper” section adds richer questions to carry into a nature notebook.

One small beetle becomes a whole cross-curricular unit, and a lot of good afternoons outside.
